“Anđelka Milić” Award for Knjiženstvo

The project Knjiženstvo, Theory and History of Women’s Writing in Serbian until 1915 won the prestigious “Anđelka Milić” award for 2020 for the support to the development of creating knowledge in the area of gender studies in Serbia (theory and research).

The “Anđelka Milić” award has been given by SEFEM – Section for Feminist Research and Critical Studies of Masculinity (http://sefem.org) since 2015 and it encompasses several categories. It was established in memory of Professor Anđelka Milić (1942-2014), a sociologist, activist and feminist who initiated the first gender studies at the University of Belgrade in 1992. So far, several authors connected with the project Knjiženstvo and courses in gender studies at the Faculty of Philology have received this award.

The explanation for the award to the Knjiženstvo project reads as follows:

“The Knjiženstvo project is based on the gynocritical concept of the revalorisation of women’s writing and the concepts of digital humanities. The combination of these scientific approaches led initially to the development of a database, and then the establishment of the journal Knjiženstvo, Journal for Studies in Literature, Gender and Culture. The project uses theoretical models relevant for the study of women’s writing, but in a technologically modern environment. The open-access database and journal are completely in line with the feminist principles of availability and democratisation of knowledge. The project is invaluable because it works as an open encyclopaedic structure that aims to list and describe women’s work in a biographical and bibliographical manner.”

The award ceremony was held on February 29, 2020, at the Aero Club in Belgrade.
